Question 1

Next to your house, a traditional restaurant has been replaced by an international fast food chain restaurant. Write an article for the school magazine to describe what happened and the reaction of the people living on your street.

Globalization is happening and it is happening fast and in every sector of our society. Even, in the food market.

Even in a country like France, where our cuisine is internationally recognized and appreciated. We are not protected by this phenomenon. It happened last month in my neighborhood with the closing of my favorite restaurant Chez Michel, this restaurant was founded in 1890 by a cook named Fabienne Jolie. She named a restaurant Chez Michelin memory of a late father, a railroad worker who worked all his life hoping that one day he will have enough money to open his own restaurant, he couldn’t so his daughter did it for him.

Fabienne died a long time ago but the spirit of Chez Michel was preciously kept by his new owners and people seemed to appreciate the quality of the cuisine but also the warmth, the kindness and the generosity of the hosts. However, with years passing less and less people seemed to go to this restaurant, often when I was walking by Chez Michel I was surprised to see just a few people sitting. Then, I was not that surprised when I learned that it was closing down, what surprised me however was the reaction of my neighbors. These people who, for the majority, didn’t even go to the restaurant, or didn’t knew the story of its creation, seemed to be sincerely upset by its closing. They were talking about it in the street, in the park, in the bakery, at the bus stop. Every one of them agreed that the closing of Chez Michel was an awful loss for our communities and for the ties that were holding us as a community. But few, if none of them, talked about their responsibilities in the death of the restaurant. They do not talk about the fact that they never had dinner there, that they didn’t come to events organized by the owners to keep a sense of community and share in the neighborhood. They didn’t even come when the last party was thrown by the owners to celebrate the life of Chez Michel, they didn’t come and I didn’t either, I was too occupied working or just being somewhere else than in that little old restaurant without a Wi-Fi connection.

We didn’t come when Michel closed and it closed. I and other people of my neighborhood, organized in an association, tried to organize the boycott of the new fast-food, we naively thought that if people did not go to this restaurant maybe we were faithful to Michel.

We managed to convince people, to the point that the night of the grand opening only 10 persons were waiting to taste the cuisine of this new place. I know it because me and, my neighbor, Tim, were standing near the restaurant trying to take the names of every people inside. We were also there when the sign with the name of the restaurant lit up. The tiny blisters formed Chez Fabienne et Michel, leaving us in the shocked contemplation of a name that we supposed American or at least not French. All the neighborhood talked about this so French name the next morning, everyone was trying to understand what it meant and what we should think of it. Until, my mother decided to go there and talk with the owners. She came back home one hour later with a bag full of cooked-food and explained us that the owner of the restaurant was actually the great-grand-son of Fabienne Jolie. Sebastien Jolie, was just trying to honor his family and their love for cooking and sharing. The news toured the neighborhood, and soon everyone went tasting the wonderful cuisine of Sebastien. Now, Fabienne & Michel has become the heart of our neighborhood, replacing the void left by Michel, and forces us to give a more significant place to what we have, afraid that we are of losing it again.
